It’s a Goal! Programme

At Tranmere Rovers FC

It's a Goal is an eleven week programme for men suffering from low self esteem and depression. It runs in football stadia around the country and uses football metaphor (we do not play a game of football) to help men to take more control of the issues in their lives; rather than focusing on the negative debilitating effects of being depressed, it's emphasis is on 'being the best you can be'; and everything is done to make it look and feel non-clinical.

trfc-crest-2010-11-1126.JPGSince its launch at Tranmere Rovers Football Club in March 2011, It’s a Goal! has helped a number of people in Wirral to face their life issues and problems in a healthy and constructive way and, through application of programme material, empowered them to move forward in their lives by achieving an important personal goal.

It’s a Goal! peer group self development programme reaches out to those experiencing depression, anxiety, low confidence, and low self-esteem is through use of football metaphor and imagery to deliver and explain its message and, through hosting ‘matches’ or programme sessions in the friendly neutral environment of a football stadium such as Tranmere Rovers FC (TRFC) Prenton Park. While It’s a Goal! is designed for and is primarily aimed at men, it aims to be inclusive and so we can also accept referrals from women with depression.

It’s a Goal! is now seeking referrals of men aged 18 years and above for our fourth 11 week ‘season’ of It’s a Goal! at TRFC which we hope to start  in January 2012.

Christmas can be a time that can be particularly difficult and stressful for anyone, especially those in despair or lonely, what better way for you to help someone you know, if not a client or service user maybe a family member, a friend or a colleague who is finding life tough, than give them something to look forward to in the New Year by bringing the It’s a Goal! programme to their attention and giving them a chance to turn their lives round?

Referral Process

The process of referral is quite simple and convenient. Referrals can either be made directly through a third party such as a relative, friend, colleague or professional source such as a GP or Social Worker. In either case all that is required is a phone call, text message or e-mail outlining the name of the person being referred and a contact telephone number.
